GLM-5.1 – what is it?

2026-05-04

GLM-5.1 from Z.AI is a large language model focused on engineering tasks, software development and autonomous agent-based scenarios. One of the key features of GLM-5.1 is its large context window of up to 200,000 tokens and output of up to 128,000 tokens. This makes it possible to work with extensive technical documentation, logs, repository fragments or groups of related files. In practice, the model is used effectively for end-to-end audits of legacy code, automated vulnerability discovery and interactive analysis of multi-page system failure logs.

It also supports a reasoning mode, which allows complex tasks to be broken down step by step or errors in code to be identified. GLM-5.1 is most effective in tasks where consistent progress towards a result is important, that is, long-horizon tasks, because the model can propose a solution, check it, correct the errors it has found and continue working while taking previous steps into account.

GLM-5.1 is distributed with open weights under the MIT licence, so it can be deployed in a company’s own environment and adapted to specific tasks. This makes it possible to deploy the model in a closed on-premise environment for secure work with confidential intellectual property and for the automation of CI/CD processes without the risk of data leakage. However, the model is resource-intensive, requires appropriate IT infrastructure and needs powerful GPU accelerators and an optimised software stack for normal inference.
