Virtual Machine (VM)

2026-05-08

Virtual Machine (VM) is an isolated software environment that emulates a full-fledged compute server with its own operating system, CPU resources, memory, storage, and network interfaces. Architecturally, a virtual machine operates on top of a hypervisor, which is responsible for abstracting physical hardware, allocating resources, and ensuring isolation between multiple VMs. This enables running multiple independent environments on a single physical server with guarantees of security, manageability, and predictable performance.

In practical scenarios, a virtual machine (VM) is used to deploy enterprise applications, database servers, web services, test and development environments, as well as to build private and public clouds. This approach enables rapid resource scaling, automated deployment via templates and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), backup and recovery capabilities, and efficient utilization of hardware resources. Additionally, VMs integrate with monitoring, security, and orchestration systems, enabling stable operation of IT services in production environments.
